Pokémon GO lets Explorer Gadget work while the app is open

In short

Pokémon GO can now let Explorer Gadget attempt to catch Pokémon and spin PokéStops while the player uses the app. The same update makes the difference between used and unused PokéStops clearer.

Explorer Gadget previously operated only while the app was not open. Following the 2 November update, a pink Poké Ball icon appears above whatever the Gadget is handling during active play. Players can still tap the Pokémon or PokéStop themselves before the Gadget takes over.

The automation reduces the need for precise movements when catching or selecting items on the map. Can I Play That? therefore finds the change useful for players who have difficulty with those touch actions. The official change list also says increased color saturation should provide clearer visual contrast between spun and unspun PokéStops. A dedicated appraisal button makes information about caught Pokémon quicker to open.

Explorer Gadget becomes available at level 20. It uses only standard Poké Balls, does not attempt to catch some Pokémon that are missing from the Pokédex, and has daily limits for catches and spins. It also cannot operate at the same time as an accessory such as Pokémon GO Plus +.

The update does not document screen-reader support or non-visual map navigation. It should therefore be understood as assistance with specific touch and contrast barriers, not confirmation that all of Pokémon GO can be played without sight.
