Accessibility
- Screen reader support through a BizHawk/Lua setup, Tolk, and NVDA components.
- Speaks menus, dialog, and important game messages according to the project README and AudioGames.net testers.
- Dedicated shortcuts can read gold, HP, MP, experience, and the current map.
- Pathfinding features can cycle through people/places, repeat the selected target, and announce directions to it.
- Playable with keyboard or D-pad/mapped emulator buttons after BizHawk is configured.
Known limitations
- You must own or obtain the Dragon Warrior ROM legally; the mod should not be paired with a pirated ROM.
- Setup is more technical than a normal PC game: copy files into BizHawk, run speech_bridge.bat, and load the Lua script.
- The BizHawk interface can be awkward with a screen reader. An NVDA-focused BizHawk build or launch batch file may reduce this.
- The AudioGames.net thread mentions emulator lag/crashes, pathfinding blocked by obstacles, and battle text/HP announcements being missed unless the in-game text speed is set fast.
- This applies only to the first NES Dragon Warrior, not Dragon Warrior II-IV or the Game Boy Color versions.
Price/status
The mod is free on GitHub. You need a legal copy/ROM of the original game and BizHawk on Windows.
